Joachim and Anna - Rosanne Pappas

This year I've decided to sketch many of The Great Holy Men and Women of the Church. Come along with me on this journey as we get to know our elder brothers and sisters in faith.

"And therefore we also having so great a cloud of witnesses over our head, laying aside every weight and sin which surrounds us, let us run by patience to the fight proposed to us," Heb 12:1

Joachim and Anna

(Ancestors of Christ)

The righteous Joachim (Hebrew: יְהוֹיָקִים, yow-akim) and Anna (Hebrew: חַנָּה, n’eh) were the parents of the Virgin Mary and the grandparents of Jesus. Anna was born in Bethlehem, and married Joachim of Nazareth, both descendants of King David. Joachim was described as a rich and pious man, who regularly gave to the poor and to the synagogue at Sepphoris. Tradition has it that the parents of the Blessed Virgin, who, apparently, first lived in Galilee, came later on to settle in Jerusalem. They are the patrons of grandparents.
