Matthew the Apostle (Hebrew: ‫מַתִּתְיָהוּ‬‎ Mattityahu ) was, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and, according to Christian tradition the author of the Gospel which bears his name. Matthew was a 1st century Galilean Jew. Matthew collected taxes from the Hebrew people for Herod Antipas, the tetrarch of Galilee. His tax office was located in Capernaum. He later joined Jesus as a follower throughout his ministry. According to tradition, he brought the message of Christianity to the Ethiopian people and was martyred in Africa.‬‬
